Season 3, Episode 6, Columbo - Mind over Mayhem (1974)
This episode was directed by Alf Kjellin, and written by Steven Bochco, Dean Hargrove, and Roland Kibbee.
There are not many exceptional outfits in this episode, as most of the characters are either scientists, in the military, or cops, and accordingly are dressed conservatively. But let's celebrate some good ones.
1) Margaret Nicholson's green shirt dress:
This has a big butterfly collar, tuxedo pleats down the front, and a cute matching belt.
It hits at her knee and she's wearing some sensible ivory pumps. She looks nervous, but casually professional.
2) Margaret's pink checkerboard turtleneck:
Just a hint of style for the psychiatrist. Worn under a black a-line skirt suit:
3) For the first time with a Columbo Clothes and Laughs trifecta, Margaret Nicholson sweeps the awards with her navy and white dress:
It's navy blue long sleeve with a wide white contrast collar at the neckline and cuffs.
The a-line skirt hitting above the knee is sweet. Solid dress.
Honorable mention to Neil Cahill's yellow and blue plaid button down shirt:
The shirt is fun and festive, but in his state of sadness and shame he's paired it with some sad shameful plagiarizing scientist gray slacks, black belt, and saddle tan shoes, and the outfit on a whole is lackluster, though appropriate for his life at that moment.
Honorable mention for decor and accessories goes out to Robby the Robot just for existing:
The funniest lines in this episode are when the boy genius, who is named Steven Spelberg, as a nod to Steven Spielberg the boy genius who at age 24 directed the first Columbo TV Episode 1, Season 1, which is funny in itself, calls himself a boy genius
And when Steve says that Columbo's basset hound, Dog, doesn't look like a police dog.
Dog isn't a police dog, he's a policeman's dog and believe Columbo, there's a big difference.
Also funny is Columbo telling Margaret some people say he's snoopy.
