Season 4, Episode 5, Columbo - Playback (1975)
This episode was directed by Bernard Kowalski, and written by David P. Lewis, Booker Bradshaw, and Richard Levinson.
The three best outfits in this episode are:
1) Elizabeth Van Wick's green gown:
This is simply amazing. It has sheer long green sleeves and a colorful embroidered bodice. The style is some kind of Tyrolian trachten dirndl Alpen Bavarian renaissance faire hippie bohemian style hybrid of delight.
The back is open and has the same embroidered ribbon trim.
It has a long skirt and she looks incredible.
2) Elizabeth Van Wick's yellow accordion gown:
This has all kinds of flowing pleats and overlays and flutter and is the color of butter.
Long skirt, fanned out sleeves, she is a vision.
3) With the very rare clean sweep we are going with Elizabeth Van Wick's pink silk nightgown with furry trimmed robe:
And the furry trim is extremely plush and luxurious with satin bows running the length.
Her matching furry slippers are glorious. 10/10 sleepwear.
Honorable mention for fashion goes out to Marcy and her strappy brown and white psychedelic flower petal slash cloud line art dress:
Honorable mention for fashion also goes out to Harold Van Wick's gold turtleneck under a chocolate brown blazer
It is absolutely 1975.
Bonus points for jewelry go out to Francine's gold squares necklace:
Segue right into this episode's funniest lines, Francine telling Columbo "You see, we don't explain art, I mean that's just sort of something you feel.
Another adorable scene is when Columbo's dog, Dog, is jumping on Elizabeth
Bonus points for disability justice from Elizabeth telling Columbo to treat her like everybody else:
"You don't have to be afraid that I'll break into pieces, Lieutenant. Everyone always thinks they have to tiptoe around me."
And Columbo's acknowledgement and apology. "You're right. That's just stupid. Sorry." Simple. Respect.
Bonus points for furniture go out to the Van Wick's green scallop shell sofa:
It's lime green with white and yellow fan shape pattern. That's a really fun and festive sofa.
