Season 5, Episode 1, Columbo - Forgotten Lady (1975)

Season 5, Episode 1, Columbo - Forgotten Lady (1975)

This episode was directed by Harvey Hart, and written by William Driskill, William Link and Richard Levinson.

As soon as we see Grace Wheeler Willis (Janet Leigh) playing a fading stage and film star, there is no doubt who will sweep the 3 best outfits awards:

1) Grace in a pale shell pink silky turtleneck with matching pants lined with white fur:

On first glance as she's dancing with Ned Diamond, we believed this to be a full length gown with white fur trim.

It is, however, certainly pants.

Her matching pink head scarf with long silk white fringes completes the look.

2) Grace in a white one-shoulder asymmetrical goddess gown:

Diamond accents, layers of flowing sheer white perfection.

We also love her wallpaper and a glimpse into her closet.

3) Grace's dance practice outfit:

She's wearing a sheer psychedelic floral disco blouse with puffy sleeves tied in front, with a wide gold headband, and some neutral dance pants. She looks amazing.

Honorable mention for best outfit goes out to Columbo who looks unusually elegant and simply smashing in his double breasted tuxedo with cigars in the pocket:

Bonus points for fashion go out the the announcer in the opening scene sporting a tuxedo jacket with small blue and green flowers all over:

Bonus points for boldness in fashion go out to Ned Diamond in a maroon corduroy jacket over an orange silk turtleneck sweater:

And big bonus points for vintage graphic t-shirt wearing awarded to the back up dancer in the Mount Vernon (Ohio) (High School) Yellow Jackets 70s tee. This could be Champion Blue Bar or maybe Fruit of the Loom. We would immensely love to see the tag.

The funniest moments in this episode are when Columbo feeds ice cream cones to his dog, Dog:

Uh oh, not too fast, you'll knock it out of the cone.

Also when Columbo is dangling from a tree

Also when Columbo confesses to Ned Diamond that he is self conscious about dancing in public and asks is there anything he can do to fix that problem and Ned tells him to "become a critic."

Wise.

Bonus points for decor go out to the Willis' house wallpaper:

Every room we see is covered in incredibly bold colorful floral patterned wallpaper.

Brava.

I've never seen so much bonus coverage. Bonus clothes, bonus laughs, bonus everything. They likely had a very productive off season after season 4 and spilled it all out into Season 5 Episode 1.
