Season 2 Episode 4:  “Columbo” Dagger of the Mind (TV Episode 1972)


This episode was directed by Richard Quine, and written by Jackson Gillis, WIlliam Link and Richard Levinson. 


The 3 best outfits in this episode are:


1) Lillian Stanhope’s white feather gown:

 


 

This outfit is nothing short of angelic. An angelic swan. White turtleneck slinky gown with big feather cuffed sleeves and a feather ring around the waist. Is that an angel?

 


 

 The ultimate belle of the ball: 

 


 

 

2) Lillian’s yellow blouse under a black dress: 

 


 

The blouse has puffed sleeves with tie cuffs, and the high neck with the long thin slit gives the illusion of cleavage. 


When styled under a black dress it gives a most dramatic look:

 


 

 3) Tie between two Extras’ outfits, first the Londoner with the pear sweater: 


This looks like a navy blue wool or acrylic knit Henley 4-button neckline sweater with contrast red sleeves, green piping around the neck yoke, and an adorable yellow pear on front. We love this sweater. 

 

And also the extra wearing a gown with two holes cut out of the back: 


This dress, with its gold covered buttons, and the chevron stripe design of the day-glo orange and gold deserves celebration. 



The funniest line in this episode is when Mr. Frame tells Columbo that his taste is garbage, minutes before Columbo busts him for murder: 

 



  

Bonus points for makeup goes out to Lillian’s eye makeup as Lady Macbeth:

 Season 5, Episode 6, Columbo - Last Salute to the Commodore (1976)     This episode was directed by Patrick McGoohan, and written by Jackson Gillis, Richard Levinson, and William Link.   Some people really do not like this episode but it's one of our very favorites. The best way to view this episode is as if everyone involved from writing to directing to every actor and extra - is high on hallucinogenic drugs at almost all times. Columbo invades the personal space of every person he comes across, sometimes several times. It's a psychedelic journey of hilarity.
