Season 2, Episode 1, Columbo - Étude in Black (1972)

Season 2 Episode 1:  “Columbo” Étude in Black (TV Episode 1972)

This episode was directed by Nicholas Colasanto (aka “Coach” from “Cheers”), Peter Falk and John Cassavetes. It was written by Steven Bochco, Richard Levinson and William Link.

The three best outfits from this episode are:

1) Janice Benedict (played by Blythe Danner who was 5 months pregnant with Gwyneth Paltrow gestating in her uterus during filming) has an amazing casual style despite being set behind desks and tables and pashminas and flower planters to hide her pregnancy. We love this bright green turtleneck with black and diagonal rainbow stripe jumper:

Really fun outfit:

2) Mrs. Fielding in a kelly green sailor suit:

All the way down to matching green leather heels

3) Back to Janice in a sailor-style tennis mini-dress with v-neck tennis sweater draped over her shoulders:

It's all so preppy and cool

Eagle eye alert! In this episode, Janice is also seen sporting a beige and brown tie-front suit that will be repurposed in an upcoming episode by Karen Fielding!

Every line of this episode is a masterpiece, but the funniest are when the trumpet player says to Columbo, “You’re not a jazz freak.”

And when Columbo tells the veterinarian that all his new dog, Dog, does is sleep and drool:

Extra bonus funny line is Alex Benedict with the quickest and most congenial murder confession of all time, shaking Columbo’s hand and saying, sincerely,  “Goodbye, genius” as he is hauled off to jail:

Bonus points for decor awarded to the Maestro’s house which was the same exterior used for Benson and Fresh Prince of Bel Air:

The interior stained glass domes are spectacular:
