Season 3, Episode 5, Columbo - Publish or Perish (1974)
This episode was directed by Robert Butler and written by Peter Fischer, Richard Levinson and William Link.
The three best outfits in this episode are:
1) Riley Greenleaf's polka dot shirt outfit:
He's wearing a navy and white polka dotted huge butterfly collared shirt under a navy blazer with white buttons and a white pocket square.
He's paired this with some gray flannel trousers and looks like the ultimate 1973 slightly nautical, slightly preppy, slightly disco, ever so hip gentleman.
2) Eagle eyes for fashion will notice that murder victim Alan Mallory is sporting the exact same brown denim western blazer with white contrast stitching and shoulder epaulets that Enrico Guiseppe Carsini (S3E2 Any Old Port in a Storm) is wearing when his brother bops him on the head with a gold pot.
This outfit seems to incite murderous rage.
3) Eileen McRae's red hat look:
This is a small cowboy hat slash fedora looking hybrid hat with a shiny black leather studded band.
She's wearing a matching red blazer and a soft velour or chamois looking light green butterfly collar blouse. Sometime since 1973, corporate Christmas has overtaken all acceptable usage of complementary colors red and green next to each other. This is a good example of when it still worked.
Honorable mention for outfits go out to Greenleaf's houndstooth blazer
Over a gray turtleneck sweater with a red pocket square - bam:
And Greenleaf's pink shirt red tie ensemble:
This is a gray with a little red plaid suit, with pink oxford button down shirt and bright Brodie red tartan plaid tie.
It's bold.
The funniest lines in this episode are when Riley Greenleaf is being kicked out of a bar for drunken belligerence and tells the owner "You and this place deserve to be in the Valley."
And when Columbo gets the exorbitant bill for chili at Chasen's and the waiter adds 75 cents to it:
He had the chili and the iced tea. $6.75 is roughly $42 in 2023 dollars.
Bonus points for decor go out to the huge "Modern Aztec Courtship Practices" poster in the Greenleaf Publications office:
Got me thinkin'.
